Domestic Violence Is An Epidemic That Does Not Discriminate

I do not understand football. In fact I could not tell you the difference between a touchdown and a field goal. What I do understand, thanks to my four years at Northern Arizona University, is that domestic violence is an epidemic that does not discriminate. It is prevalent in poor neighborhoods, upper middle class households, and in the million dollar condos of superstar athletes. This paper is intended to highlight domestic violence in popular culture and I can think of no better example than the recent attention the National Football League has received due to domestic violence cases amongst its players and their families. Turn on ESPN or any sports network and you can get a lifetime’s worth of statistics on the NFL’s athletes. You can learn in seconds how a quarterback has thrown the ball year to year, you can learn about every reception made by a wide receiver, you can even learn about how many times a team has won in a certain stadium and what the weather was li ke for each of those games. But let’s talk about some other statistics, the kind that the majority of Americans do not pay attention to. Domestic violence is not exclusive; women, men, and children are victims. According to the text, annual estimates suggests that 4 to 9 million people are victims of family violence and 171 million (or 60% of the population) are at risk of violence (McClennen, Chapter 1).
